THIS VERY LARGE ANTIQUE probably 18th. To early 19th Century SILVER COVERED TIBETAN CONCH HORN WITH PRECIOUS CORAL AND TURQUOISE INSERTS WAS HAND CARVED AND DECORATED IN NEPAL. It is covered with symbols of compassion and the lightning path to enlightenment. This unique conch horn measures over 8 inches in length, 4.5 in diameter and weighs over 2 pounds & 5 ounces. It incorporates intricate silver work showing Tibetan astrological animals in silver, and old coral and Tibetan turquoise stones. The carvings and signs usually have a positive connotation referring to energy and creativity. The conch shell or SANKHA is one of the eight auspicious symbols in Tibetan Buddhism and usually refers to Vishnu and the absence of all evil. In Buddhist religious ceremonies the trumpet is especially used as a symbol to the Gods as the sounds made by blowing into the shell vibrate far and wide. This horn intricately represents auspicious symbols in Tibetan Buddhism in addition to the very dominant intricately carved Buda-like figure on the front. Conch trumpets form an integral ritual tool of prayer offerings in Tibetan Buddhism. Its actual exact age is unknown. It has NO RESERVE and a very low asking price.
